The snacks in this chapter are nutritious and healthy compared to the junk-food snacks many children eat. The recipes include fresh and dried fruits, fresh vegetables, granola, and yogurt.

The granolas and mixes will allow children to experience tastes and textures such as sweet, sour, chewy, and crunchy. They will be exposed to subtraction and fractions through altering the recipes to change the serving quantities. New vocabulary will include the words mashing and packed.

The recipes in the puddings and mousses section develop children’s problem-solving skills as they choose what ingredients they would like for parfaits and figure out how to create new colors for rainbow pudding. These recipes provide much healthier puddings than those made from mixes or purchased ready to serve.

Children will have the opportunity to make sandwiches and salads that are usually made ahead of time. When they make the “walking salad,” they will be excited to discover that you don’t always have to eat a salad out of a bowl!
